Nuit Blanche sets out a night of contemporary art in its greatest form, moving work from the traditional musuem walls, out onto the city streets. An opportunity to address pedestrians (our audience) in the public realm as they traveled from one exhibtion to the next. This installation was comprised of 5,000 pairs of socks hung on 200 clotheslines. The mass of socks reflct the number of people living in the gTA without adequate housing. The cluster of clotheslines created a sheltering effect for pedestrians. The installation created awareness and dialogue amongst its audience as they recognized, through a visual experience, what the number 5,000 looks like. Socks hung during the event were distributed to city shelters.
